DPC Injection & Rising Damp Treatment in Sydney. What's Involved.
Rising damp happens when there is no damp-proof course in a wall, or the original course has broken down over time. Without a barrier in place, moisture is drawn up through the masonry from the ground by capillary action, carrying salts with it. Over time this shows up as damp patches, crumbling plaster and peeling paint low down on internal and external walls.
A DPC injection treatment creates a new chemical damp-proof course inside the wall. Small holes are drilled along a mortar line close to ground level and a specialist cream or fluid is injected into the masonry. The chemical spreads through the wall and cures into a water-repellent barrier, stopping moisture from travelling any higher.
Many of Sydney's older homes, particularly in established suburbs and areas with sandstock brick construction, were built without a damp-proof course or had one that has since failed. Rising damp is also common in properties where ground levels have been built up against a wall over time, bridging the original damp course and letting moisture back in.
Every property is different, which is why we assess each job individually. The extent of the damp, the type of masonry, the wall thickness and the level of salt contamination all affect the treatment plan. Once the new damp course is injected, the affected plaster or render at low level usually needs to be removed and reinstated, since salt-contaminated material will keep drawing moisture even after the wall itself is treated.
